“Music is a central part of my life. Performing the songs and tunes I love and developing new material or hearing an old tune in a new vein, recording or working with others who love the music as I do are the things I love so much that I'd be lost without them. Some people work to live; I can't imagine not living to play.”

Born in London to Irish parents, Deirdre studied classical music from the age of six, playing piano and flute as well as singing. She went on to study music at tertiary level, sang with the London Symphony Chorus and freelanced as a church organist at many London churches.

Haunting and emotive are two words that could be used to describe Deirdre's musical style. However, with her rich blend of material ranging from traditional ‘sean nos' (unaccompanied ballads) through to contemporary songs, it is difficult to encompass her unique style in two words.

Performing predominantly as soloist, Deirdre has sung regularly in New Zealand Folk Clubs and Irish Societies and performed at the famous Molly Malone's Irish Bar in Wellington. She has sung on New Zealand television, recorded for Radio New Zealand and has headlined at the Wellington and Christchurch Folk Festivals. She is also the first singer to represent New Zealand at the prestigious Fleadh Cheoil na h'Eireann where she competed in the Unaccompanied Singing competition.

Deirdre's performances in New Zealand have included playing alongside Maire Ni Chathasaigh and Chris Newman at the Wellington Folk Festival, supporting the House Band, Jimmy O Brien-Moran and concerts given by Declan Masterson, Mairin Fahy and Chris Kelly, the Riverdance musicians. She has played alongside Christine Collister (UK), Julie Matthews and Chris While (UK), and Ealu (Ireland). As well, she has featured in the popular, sell out New Zealand's Woman's Heart concerts and has played in many other venues either as a soloist or with other musicians. At the end of 1997, she won the much-coveted Folk Award at the Wellington Music Awards and found time to commence recording with the notable New Zealand record label, White Cloud.

In December 1998, White Cloud, created by the legendary British musician and producer, Jon Mark, released The Leaving of Ireland CD featuring Deirdre on the vocal tracks. In the 1960's, Jon worked with Marianne Faithfull on her first five albums. In the late 1960's, he joined John Mayall and the Blue's Breakers and went on to form the hugely popular US-based Mark Almond Band. In the 1980's, Jon moved to New Zealand and explored his love of Celtic melodies and song.

In 1999, Deirdre signed to White Cloud. She began working on her solo album with Jon Mark as producer. She took time-out in early 2000 when her son was born although she continued to record material for her new album. Deirdre's album, ‘Quiet Land of Erin' was released in June 2003. In August 2003, Deirdre moved to Ireland and is now based in Co. Wicklow. In October 2003, she was invited to Germany to perform material from her album for the acclaimed live music programme, ‘Matinee der Liedersanger' hosted by Jan Reichow for WDR-5 Radio. She returned to Germany in 2005 for 18 concerts, as part of the Irish Spring Festival Tour and completed work on her album, The Long Finger, produced by Trevor Hutchinson (Lunasa), released in May 2005 and distributed by Claddagh Records. In August 2005, Deirdre was invited to perform at the Kilkenny Arts Festival. This month also saw Deirdre feature on the Irish television network (RTÉ), magazine programme Nationwide, and also on the Irish language channel TG4 arts programme Féilte 2005.

Another tour of Germany occoured in 2006 and selected Irish dates during the same year.In June 2006 Deirdre began work on her new album with time spent back in New Zealand working on new material. In October Deirdre began recording the album 'By the Way' with Trevor Hutchinson again on production duties. The Album is due for release in Germany and Switzerland in Feburary as Deirdre begins a 3 week tour. The relesae date in Ireland is set for March with concerts planned to support the album launch.
